Shake ya Tail Feather: Peacock Blue Velvet Sofas, Ming Coffee Table, Layered Rugs & Ruffled Mirror

Shake ya Tail Feather: Peacock Blue Velvet Sofas, Ming Coffee table, Layered Rugs & Ruffled Mirror

I feel like I landed on some type of “decorator challenge” show for spaces that have a really funky floor plan - enter our living room - an incredibly open space with light gray carpeting, soaring 25 foot ceilings, NINE ivory walls of varying widths (from 3ft to 25 ft.) plus two large “openings” to enter the room via either our nook or our entry. I wanted the room to be an inviting, happy and conversation comfortable space that also felt glamorous. I knew painting was out of the question (due to the super pricey bids we had received) so instead of saturating the walls with color I wanted to bring in color through our upholstery and accessories.

The first purchases for the living room, were two peacock blue sofas, gifted to us from my generous mama! Our peacock blue velvet sofa “round-table discussions” would take place among several impromptu pow-wows sitting on said peacock blue sofa with my mother & MIL inside the furniture store! I would pull out my oh-so-fancy Ziploc baggie full of fabrics and would desperately try to figure out how I could use them all – eventually I succeeded by using multiple fabrics in chairs and through an abundance of pillows, pillows and more pillows!

The “Ming” coffee table I scored at Salvation Army and after a few coats of gray paint was a better choice than the large gray tufted upholstered ottoman I had originally envisioned (at least for now!) The Salvation Army "Ming" table reminds me of Kindel Furniture’s Dorothy Draper Collection Yumi Cocktail Table, and we know how much this DD devotee loves that!

When I first spotted the rug shown below I could not believe my eyes – it had
the exact coloring I wanted:

But as time passed I chose to go with a “layered” look instead – using a hand-woven wool Jill Rosenwald Fallon rug (in Elephant Grey) spotted for me by my MIL at Nell Hill’s Briarcliff in Kansas City paired with an Amazon Green Cowhide rug from Horchow  layered on top. I love the look it created!

The peacock blue ruffle mirror above I found at a flea market – it was originally gold and I thought it would be fun to add a splash of color to the wall by changing the frame from gold to peacock blue! The French wooden table was a hand-me-down from my mother and the antique pink and green chairs flanking it have been with me through a few moves – they were perfect for this space.

If you are in the market for a ruffle mirror check this fun one out from Brocade Home:
