Half & Half: Dorothy Draper Inspired Black and White Guest Bedroom

Half & Half: Dorothy Draper Inspired Black and White Guest Bedroom

I have long been enchanted with the design of Dorothy Draper – I love her bold use of color, grandiose accents, pattern combinations and mirrors, mirrors, mirrors!  I'm what one might call a DD Devotee!

Whats not to love about The Greenbrier's Draper's Cafe, for example? Black, white, pink, green with a touch of blue - complete perfection! (ps I had pink & white awnings at our wedding - true story!)

The theme of the guest bedroom began 6 years ago inside the attic of an antique dealer. There stood the Dorothy Draper Espana Bunching Chest . . . she was of course coming home with me! Sadly, my DD chest is not the authentic, cherry wood lacquered,  gold leaf, Heritage stamped version (chests currently in production from Kindel Furniture)– but it is a fabulous vintage imposter! I have been on the lookout for its twin ever since.

The black and gold Draper inspired Espana Bunching Chest gave way to the look of the guest bedroom . . . a room filled with a bit of DD!

Known for dramatic color combinations, shown throughout her designs and in her love of black and white marble checkerboard floor tiles, "black and white" quickly became the guest rooms foundation.

I incorporated other design concepts that Dorothy Draper was known for such as large prints – shown in the guest room headboard, rug & drapes; mirrors – shown above the chests and through the lamps; romantic baroque lines – shown in the carved details of the chests, curve of the headboard and scroll of the glossy black side table; colorful contrasting surroundings – shown here in splashes of hot pink and lime green among the dramatic black and white foundation as well as pattern play by mixing floral, chevron and houndstooth fabrics.

Most of the furnishings and accessories in the "DD" guest room I have had for
years - - - this room has made several moves! I, along with some of you I'm sure, gave into the madness that was Missoni for Target, as is evident in the pink toss pillows and throw (I made it bright & early to Target and snagged the pillows but the throw was actually my first ebay purchase! I simply had to have it!) With the addition of the vibrant pillows, a collection of green vintage books and antique poodles (gifts from my MIL, and these two girls) added to the black faux bamboo hollywood regency vintage etagere (with Chinese chippendale brackets), the guest room was complete.

Due to my obsession love of Dorothy Draper and Mr.Z's obsession   love of golf, we are on the waiting list for a room at this years Greenbrier Classic at The Greenbrier, America's Resort decorated by Dorothy Draper & Carleton Varney for July 4th   . . . wish us luck!
